I have to say, the hike back down Wabanaki Mountain was easier than the way up, although by the time we got back to the car, the sun was blazing and all I could think about was a cool shower and a little nap before I had to work that night.

Brandy got Ethan into the car, then collapsed into her driver’s seat. She rested her head on the back of her seat, closing her eyes. “That was a workout and a half.”

I sighed, glad to be sitting too.

But Brandy’s exhaustion was quickly eclipsed by her new passion. Detective work. “So I know we couldn’t talk with everyone around.” We had done much better keeping up with the other hikers on the way down. Of course, it helped that one of the teenagers who worked for the tour had offered to take Ethan on his shoulders on the way back. “But I’ve been dying. What did you find out?”

“Not much. But Frank implied that he didn’t believe my grandfather’s accident was really an accident. And I definitely don’t think he was involved in your aunt’s disappearance and murder.”

“Wait”— she gaped at me —“you think the two were related?”

“I feel like they have to be. Grampy was possibly...” I lowered my voice and cast a look back at Ethan. He was already trying to blink away sleep. “Murdered. And your aunt was killed that same summer. And she somehow ended up hidden in my grandmother’s guesthouse wall. It seems pretty unlikely to me that two murders in one summer wouldn’t be linked. Especially when they both seem to revolve around my grandmother.”

She considered that. “That is true.”

“Momma, my belly hurts.”

Brandy turned to look over her seat. “Okay, baby, we’re heading home.” She gave me a worried look. “The poor kiddo is exhausted. Let’s talk about this more tonight.”

I nodded, totally understanding how Ethan was feeling. That cool shower and my cool sheets were calling my name. The ride home was silent due to our exhaustion.

“I’ll see you later,” Brandy said as I got out of her car.

“Yes, I’ll be there by two. This is Nathan’s first night.”

Brandy nodded. “Set an alarm. I’m going to have to. I think I could sleep straight through the night.” She shifted to look at her sleeping son. His head was flopped to the side at an angle that looked incredibly uncomfortable. But he snored softly. “But my mom is going to be happy. She isn’t going to have any problem getting this one to bed.” She smiled affectionately at her sweet boy.

“Okay, I’m off.”

I waved as she drove away.

I sighed, more walking seemed like a monumental task, but I stretched my sore muscles and headed around the side of my house. Jack lounged in the shade with his legs totally hidden under his shaggy fur. He didn’t bother to get up when he heard me approach his pen.

“Rough day, Jack?”

He opened his eyes, although they were barely visible through his thick lashes. He twitched an ear, then closed them again.
